FivexFive

Edeline Lee Fall/Winter 2013. "Source: fashion156.com."

Edeline Lee first moved from her native Canada to London 15 years ago to begin studying fashion design at Central Saint Martins. Her first ready-to-wear collection was launched at the start of 2012, after she cut her teeth in apprenticeships with the likes of Alexander McQueen, John Galliano and Zac Posen. Lee's balance of motherhood and business has left women - both in and out of the fashion industry - in awe. The Genteel caught up with Edeline to find out her life's lessons and what her favourite item of clothing is from her own wardrobe (the answer may surprise you!).

1. Who is the Edeline Lee woman?

The Edeline Lee woman is intelligent, cultured, feminine and powerful. She's a woman with a very refined aesthetic and a desire for quality.

2. Who or what were the inspirations behind your A/W 2013 collection and how are they translated into the clothes?

I discovered a wonderful collection of the regalia produced by the Odd Fellows during the early 1900s in Waxahatchie, Texas last year. There is an almost folk art vibe in these costumes that appealed to me.

Of course, by the end of the season, the idea evolved into a sorority of amateur theatrics. Don't even ask.

3. It's been a wild ride for you since your collaboration with Cora Sheibani in S/S 2012, but arguably the road up to that point has been just as influential. What are the most important lessons you've learned over the years?

Life is a wild ride! Lessons I've learnt: Love your work. Stay open-minded, everything is always in flux. Family and friends are the biggest blessing. Live in the present. Never accept no for an answer. Things always turn out for the best in the end. Gosh, this sounds like a forwarded email.

4. Where do you want to take the Edeline Lee brand over the next few years?

EL: Creatively, I would like to keep on developing my signature. There's a lot of stuff to buy out there. It’s important to have a strong point of view and do what you do very well.

5. Your favourite piece in your own wardrobe?

At the moment, a week before my [A/W 2013] show, it's my pyjamas! I wish I could wear them more often!
